Celebrity and causes

So, I happened to see a "quote" attributed to Russell Crowe about celebs contributing to charity, and then puffing their chests about it.
I have to agree with him.
Course it would have helped if what was reported to be a quote by him, was in fact a quote by him.
And yet, there are legit news agencies running with the story, not checking facts, not making sure that the first place to report the quote was actually a news place, and not say a rag. So now of course we will be getting all those people who dislike him anyway jumping on this misquote.
It seems as if the press can get nothing right, ever. I mean what is the point of journalism, when it seems no one in the field knows the truth from fiction?
Charity is something we all should do if given the opportunity. And if given the opportunity, one should do it, and do it quietly. Learn a little modesty. I understand that people think it is great to raise the awareness for the subject dujour, and in some cases I agree, but charity is charity, and awareness is awareness.
