This week I have to go to the school and demand Spenser gets an IEP. For those of you who have never heard of this, it is an Individualized Education Plan. Basically it is what the school will be doing to help Spenser get the most out school, with as little drama as possible. Now in theory that sound fan-fucking-tastic. The reality is from all accounts, not so great.
I have this idea that I am going to be fought tooth and nail by the school, because they don't want to have to pony up the extra cashola it will take to help Spenser in school.
Because it is not an outwardly physical disability, they will resist it even more. I am not sure what to expect, what to ask for, and how to go about insuring that he gets what he needs.
I have to get a hold of an advocate, so that I know what to ask for, and also to have someone who has gone through this and knows what to expect on my side.
I may ask that he has shorter school days, as it is usually the afternoons when he flips out. I may also ask, that instead of actually printing, he be allowed to use a computer or word processor, since that too happens to be a huge area where he has issues. He can print, albeit, not very neatly, but he can do it. Now since I know he can do, and the teacher knows he can do it, I see no reason why he can't have some sort of computer, so he can type. I think that would alleviate some of his stress.
I am going to have to ask that he is never touched, as that is also a trigger for his freak outs. Which is one of the things that happened on Thursday. He was touched, and they tried to move him. Wrong, wrong, wrong. Had I known that I had to specifically ask for him not To be touched, I would have done so long ago. I understand that he sometimes needs to be moved away from the rest of the kids, but having someone he has not interacted with before physically move him, was wrong on so many levels. There is a fine line here, and I don't know what exactly we are going to do. He has a few people at the school that he trusts and will usually do what they request, without a lot of issue. They did not have one of those persons on Thursday come and remove him from the situation. They had someone he has only seen in passing. Real smart Loveland Schools, real smart.
Now before anyone gets their panties in a twist, I do not condone Spenser's behavior on Thursday, at all. If I thought it was just him, and not the bipolar, I would punish him severely.
The whole situation was handled poorly. Very poorly.
I just am not looking forward to going up against the school, which is what it will be. Not looking forward to it at all. Don't know what I am going to do, how to do , and everything else that goes along with it.
If you would have told me years ago that I would this much issue with the school, I would have told you, that you were nuts. Shows what I know.
